This year as a part of afterschool activities I decided to choose a group of students for an Art Club.  Mrs. Randa Shoeb had asked if the students could paint a mural in her office. I chose a small group of art students from 5th and 6th grade to meet afterschool. Our art club meetings consisted of sketching in our really nice notebooks and painting  the mural. Thanks to our lovely principal Mrs.Shoeb and the great group of students.

This year for Mother's day I decided to make very cute tea light candles lined with parchment paper. The kindergarten students then drew themselves on the paper with crayon. The art idea was taken from a  wonderful website http://herz-allerliebst.de/2011/11/03/die-laternenzeit/
I hope all Mother's had a great day.

This year we decided to extend the idea of Internationalism to a weeklong event at Walter's Hall. Miss Judyth Lessee, Mrs. Randa Shoeb,
and I brainstormed on different activities we could have for the week. We decided on international art, cartoon shorts, music, stories, food, and finally a talent show. Every day was filled with a least one event during school lunch or at the end of the day. On the day we shared international art we discussed what students saw in the paintings selected from around the world. Displayed in our hallways were posters that classrooms had worked on to display different food, clothing, religion, art , and music.

Miss L researched the cartoon shorts from around the world and together we helped select them. On that same day we had a couple of poems and musical performances by Mrs. Saidaa El Harmoushy, Madame Lobna Mehanna, and Mrs. Asma Abdel Fattah's classes. It included songs in Arabic and French.

The following day Miss L told selected stories from around the world during lunch in the library. On Wednesday we then had all sorts of food from different cultures the included chicken satay with peanut sauce, sushi, mousakas, foul & falafel, and much more. The parents and students made an awesome effort to bring in food from all around the world.

Finally our week ended with a wonderful talent show that displayed singing, musical instruments, and dance. I hope that next year we have as much success and that the seed of international week continues to grow and blossom.

It is with great joy that some of 3D projects are finally on display. 5th grade made beautiful whimisical gnomes out a paper towel  roll and newspaper.
6th grade first designed a pharonic sarcophagus out of paper. They the had to make a 3d mummy out of newspaper, gauze( to make it look more real), and paper mache glue. The size and construction of the mummies involves trial and error while trying to make it fit inside the sarcaphagus.
Both of these projects involve students trying to make shapes that resemble specific objects. I am very happy they are on display for everyone to admire.

Skateboarders 02/14/2012

For a while now I have wanted to do an art project on skateboarding since a number of students are interested in the sport. Skateboarding was never part of my life growing up since I was too scared of riding anything fast. It has been over the past couple of years that I have had contact with different friends who do or did skate and make art.
This past summer while visiting  San Francisco my husband Bob  and I met with friends. Our friend has a  2 year old son who is able to kick up a skateboard. It was amazing to see such a  little boy do it.
So this year I was determined to find an art lesson for 3rd grade. After a couple of google searches I found this construction paper self-portrait made by artist Dagan Moriarty.

Before starting the presentation of the art project I showed pictures of my friend who is a skater. The students were in awe of her skating. We then started to make our skaters.

When traveling in Bangkok during winter break it was hard to avoid all the decorations leading to Chinese New Year. This 2012 is year of the dragon and our librarian Ms.L asked if I could make a large dragon with my art students. I said sure. So I decided to make a large dragon with 4th grade and another with 5th. Both of the dragons turned out very bright and colorful. Kindergarten through third grade made smaller dragons. We learned that people used red paint and firecrackers to scare dragons away. Coincidentally 4th and 5th had also drawn fireworks using bright crayons. Take a look at our dragons and fireworks.

PTA Playday 01/09/2012

As the PTA teacher representative, I volunteered to recruit teachers and assistants for activities this Winter playday. Both PTA and staff had a set of  activites designed for ages 3 through 11 year olds. The kids had a great time making macaroni dyed necklaces, decorating Christmas trees, making stamps, and all sorts of other cool stuff. At the end of the event Santa came by and gave presents to all the kids. Thank you to all that participated.

December Art 12/23/2011

This like every year seems to go by faster. The amount of art being produced is quite hard to keep up with. So here are a few examples of the art being completed. Fourth grade brought in containers to preserve their "Christmas Memories". The students drew different images in pencil that reminded them of Christmas then outlined them with a black fine Sharpie. Finally colored in with watercolor pencils. This art project was first done on Fem Manuals amb la Cristina @ http://manualescanigo.blogspot.com/.
Sixth grade has been working on designing their own sarcophagus and then a paper mache mummy wrapped in gauze. The final product will be displayed and hopefully presented to other grades so that they may appreciate the craftsmanship.
The ornament drawing is a close up of the drawings that were presented at the Winter concert. The students drew intricate patterns that added to their original pieces.
Kindergarten was the first class this year to complete their clay art assignment. They formed pinch pots in beautiful vibrant colors.

Every year at Walter's Hall we have a winter concert that features our students PK-3 through 6th grade performing songs along with a display of their art. It is huge labor that teachers, assistants, Principal, parents, students, workers, and most influentially Dr. Greg Leet work at making a success. This year I have been teaching PK-4 music and so I was very excited for their performance. I had been practicing a Mexican lullaby called "A La Rurru Niño", which is part of our elementary music curriculum. Another favorite part of teaching music is exposing the students to music from other countries. I take this opportunity to play Rock-n-Roll, Tango, Salsa, Swing, and Cumbia. We start out by upcycling film canisters filled with rice for our percussion instruments. This year I decided we would have the kids play along with song titled "Mal Bicho" by the Argentinian band Los Fabulosos Cadillacs. It was so much fun to have the students shake their percussion instruments and also dance to the song.
The concert was a complete success with a display of the art outside of grades kindergarten through sixth grade.

Second grade was learning about timelines and we decided to teach the kids about Pablo Picasso. I shared different biographies found in our library and showed examples of his art work. Pablo Picasso painted in different styles during his life like his Blue period, Rose period, and Cubist.
I then did some research to find a 2nd grade art lesson with Picasso in the theme. There happen to be another art teacher who has an art blog called "Mrs. Picasso's Art Room" with a Picasso art project that combined his style with monsters.
